Rubenesque Runner: my journey from excuses to exercises

Welcome to the Rubenesque Runner! For those of you looking for a “running” site, I am sorry to disappoint, I am not a runner (yet). I have friends and family members who are runners. I have books on running, I have running shoes and I’ve even signed up for some running races in my time. Yet, I have never considered myself in any way a “runner”.

As an item on my life list, I completed the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon in 2008, my one official “running” event. I finished the 13.1 miles only because my sister-in-law was by my side, forcing me to run when I didn’t want to anymore.

I envy those of you who can lace up your shoes and just run. Running is a beautiful sport. Watching my 3 children run is one of my favorite pastimes. They do it with such ease and grace, floating through the air as their feet propel them forward effortlessly. Effortless running is something I strive for, yet have never quite been able to achieve.

When I say I haven’t achieved effortless running, it isn’t because I have actually tried to become effortless. Maybe it’s because I enjoy reading while I am on the treadmill more than I like running. It could be because when I do run, I feel all the wiggles and jiggles my rubenesque figure has to offer and it is distracting. I could blame it on the fact that I don’t like to have a dry mouth, but have been banned from gum per my doctor. Need an excuse not to exercise? I have them all.

While I am not a runner, I am what I would consider Rubenesque*. When looking in the mirror a few weeks ago, I realized I could have been a muse for Rubens. I currently have the right amount of plumpness to step into one of his paintings and look right at home. I love my body; I have three beautiful children who helped create this body. But alas, they are not babies anymore and it is time for me to start taking care of myself. Over the next 124 days and beyond I will be chronicling my journey from Rubenesque non-runner to Ruckus runner.

Rubenenesque Runner is my journey from excuses to exercises. From non-runner to runner. From Rubenesque to ruckus.
